Sundance 2022: 20 Films You Need To Know About

3. Brian & Charles

Based on his 2017 short of the same name, Jim Archer's Brian and Charles is an hilarious Wales-set comedy revolving around Brian (David Earl), an eccentric, lonely man who decides one day to build himself a robot which, miraculously, comes to life.

What follows is a witty, silly, and strangely heartfelt film about loneliness and belonging, making the most of its unique setting and low-fi robot, Charles, to deliver a low-key charmer of a buddy comedy.

David Earl is utterly terrific as Brian, while co-writer Chris Hayward gives an off-the-wall physical performance as his quirky robot-with-a-soul companion.

The film ended up being acquired by Universal for international distribution, so it just might be the "little indie that could" coming out of Sundance.
