Sundance 2022: 20 Films You Need To Know About

2. Emily The Criminal

Aubrey Plaza has been on quite the roll over the last few years, further evidenced by her exceptional performance in Emily the Criminal, where she plays a down-and-out young woman buried in debt and unable to secure stable employment due to her criminal record.

As a result, she gets involved in a lucrative credit card scam which quickly escalates into something that's equally more prosperous and dangerous.

As Emily, Plaza ditches her usual po-faced sarcasm for a more earnest and innately empathetic character, who per her past mistakes has effectively been shunned from large swaths of gainful employment.

In his feature debut, John Patton Ford offers cutting social commentary about contemporary capitalism while spinning a genuinely enticing crime yarn in its own right. Plaza and co-star Theo Rossi, who plays her partner-in-crime, are both terrific.
