Sundance 2022: 20 Films You Need To Know About

14. After Yang

After Yang Colin Farrell
A24

The second film from Kogonada (Columbus) received its North American premiere at Sundance - a wonderfully low-fi sci-fi drama about a father, Jake (Colin Farrell), and his family coming to terms with the possible-death of their robotic companion, Yang (Justin H. Min).

The bulk of the film involves Jake's attempts to scrub through the memories of his fallen android babysitter and make sense of how he perceived the world, the result of which is surprisingly tender and moving.

Propelled forward by top-drawer work from Farrell, Min, and fellow cast members Jodie Turner-Smith, Haley Lu Richardson, and Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, After Yang compensates for its evidently modest budget with grand philosophical and emotional ideas.
