Sundance Film Festival 2023: 20 Movies You Need To Know About
13. Cassandro
Surely the most unexpectedly terrific biopic in recent times, Cassandro sees Gael GarcĂa Bernal portray the titular real-life Mexican wrestler famously known as the "Liberace of Lucha Libre."
It's no secret that the world of wrestling is historically homophobic and unaccepting of anything outside the straight masculine "ideal," but Cassandro is very much a celebration of how the superstar broke new ground with his proudly flamboyant presentation.
Bernal gives a sublime performance in a film that's brilliantly paced and offers up a very different side of the wrestling industry from, say, Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler.
As a queer crowd-pleaser, it more than does the job.
Cassandro releases on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
