The Avengers Vs. Avengers: Infinity War - Which Is Better?

3. Tone

If there's any one thing that's made the MCU such a huge success, especially in comparison to the DC Extended Universe, it's the tone, which generally keeps things pretty light and jovial, but isn't afraid to get dark and sad when the time calls for it.

The Avengers did a fantastic job setting the tone that most MCU movies have followed, with Joss Whedon liberally fielding out hilarious one-liners, but also making the audience care about Agent Coulson's death in particular. Whedon took the gag-spitting too far with Age of Ultron, but in the original, he totally nailed it.

The Russos and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had a far more daunting task with Infinity War, given the more sombre, imposing narrative, which had to be interwoven amid the usual wise-cracking MCU shenanigans.

Nobody would've blamed the Russos if the movie had tonal issues, but miraculously, the gags are smartly dispersed and almost never upend any of the Serious Drama.

Winner: Both films have a firm handle on tone, but due to the sheer challenge and complexity involved, Infinity War's consistency is a more impressive achievement.
