The Batman: 7 Challenges Matt Reeves Must Overcome

1. Reducing The Scale

Apocalyptic, highest possible stakes plotlines have become the norm in superhero movies on both sides of the Marvel/DC divide. This made for captivating viewing back when the Avengers was a novel concept but after watching planets collide, cities get levelled and alien spaceships collide with earth for the hundredth time, it kind of loses its effect.

It’s not like you can really top the peril of these sequences, it’s just a case of figuring out a new way of bringing the world to the brink of annihilation once again. This would be terrible for The Batman. What Reeves must do is scale it back, make a self-contained story that may have smaller repercussions overall but will be much more engaging for viewers.

Looking to source material featuring concise narratives like The Long Halloween would be a good place to start for inspiration. Of course, this is not all on Reeves, it’s also heavily dependent on the script he has to work with which, now that Affleck is apparently happy with it, is good to go.

He may be at home overseeing the sprawling shots that made his Planet of the Apes movies so visually impressive but to make the Batman movie fans are calling out for, Reeves needs to be ready to dial it back a bit, let the character do the heavy lifting and not bury him in the middle of a CGI battle with The Flash and all of the Suicide Squad or something equally ridiculous.

Do you think Matt Reeves can make a Batman movie to rival the Nolan trilogy? Let us know in the comments.
