The Batman Sequel: 10 Possible Villains (And Who Should Play Them)

7. Hugo Strange – Giancarlo Esposito

One of the industry’s most in-demand faces and names, Giancarlo Esposito is a man whom everyone wants to work with. Whether it be within film, television or even video games, Giancarlo’s talent speaks for itself, with his devotion to his craft second to none. The actor’s portrayal of Gus Fring in Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul is cemented as one of the most menacing and memorable performances in television history.

That said, an actor of Esposito’s practice and proficiency makes it difficult to tie him down to one role in particular, but an individual as cruel and contemptuous as Hugo Strange would be a part perfect for him. Perhaps a carbon copy of roles the 64-year-old has made a name for himself bringing to the screen, Strange is an intelligent and resourceful man of criminality who is obsessed with uncovering the identity and truth behind Batman.

With that in mind, the concept of Hugo Strange and his implementation within Reeves’ Gotham shouldn’t be ruled out. The pesky professor’s stomping ground of Arkham and its inhabitants has already been seen within The Batman, and Giancarlo’s iteration of the character could see him exist as not the lead antagonist, per se, but instead a subtle and elusive pillar of Gotham’s criminal underworld who’s here to stay.

Indeed, the Caped Crusader’s oldest adversary, Strange could be Reeves’ answer to the Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy relationship within the Dark Knight trilogy of films.
