The Batman Trailer Review: 7 Ups & 1 Down

5. The Grounded Approach

The last time we saw Batman on the big-screen, he was battling monstrous creatures with aliens, gods and speedsters by his side in Justice League. It may have felt normal to some at the time (well, those who enjoyed the theatrical cut of Justice League at least), but it does feel like a misuse of the hero's greatest asset - his character.

The Batman, however, has exchanged all of that for a more personal, grounded tale - something that the trailer highlighted beautifully. Here, we simply have what appears to be a thrilling murder mystery that will be solved by a deeply flawed protagonist. Sure, we still don't know to what extent Bruce Wayne's origins play into the story (other than the fact that we've been definitively told that it's not an origin story), but we do know that The Riddler has taken an interest in the crime-fighter.

Batman is a larger-than-life character, yes, but his best stories are often smaller and character-driven. If this trailer is anything to go by, this is exactly what we can expect from The Batman.
