The Expendables 3 Review: 10 Things That Sucked

3. Not Enough Banter Between Characters

One of the signature aspects of the Expendables franchise is the banter between the characters, with the most memorable exchanges to date being the Sly-Arnie-Bruce church meeting from the first movie, and Chuck Norris' hilarious monologue in the second film. Though the third film has some fun asides from Banderas and Snipes in particular, the banter just isn't on the same level as in previous films, in large part because the characters we want to see interact never do. We want to see the entire gang sat around a table at a bar (a very big table, mind), cracking wise about one another, but the script keeps most of the big-hitters away from each other, compartmentalising them into smaller groups that are easier to manage. As such, those hoping for an arm-wrestling match between Snipes and Arnie or any such testosterone-fueled fantasy are likely to leave the cinema disappointed. Given how many awesome action stars Sly and Hughes managed to rope in for the ride, there was so much potential for some hilarious dialogue.
