#TheMatrixResurrections feels born from a hostage negotiation: WB threatening the Wachowskis with making the franchise without them, one sister bailing entirely, and one only able to engage by addressing itself and then going down a metatextual rabbit hole.

Keanu Reeves gives one of his best performances in THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS. Him and Carrie-Anne Moss still have that magic chemistry, carrying a gorgeous, dynamic film that's rough in patches yet still discovers great additions in Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jessica Henwick. pic.twitter.com/oIRfGcel30

Without a doubt, @TheMatrixMovie is my fave movie of 2021. It's easily the best film since the original, Keanu & Carrie-Anne are absolutely stellar, the action kicks all kinds of ass & the story blew my mind. It exceeded every single expectation I had. #TheMatrixResurrections pic.twitter.com/LpeVayTczI

#TheMatrixResurrections is too self aware of its existence. Poking fun at itself a bit too much, it's very heavy on the love story, with not a lot of showstopping action and effects, which is what the people want. Best part is Jonathan Groff but that's just life at this point. pic.twitter.com/kXd8usdV0M

#TheMatrixResurrections is a comedy. The action is disappointing and the new characters are thin. But the metatextual commentary is biting. It wrestles with its own legacy in that JURASSIC WORLD/BAD BOYS 3/RP1 fashion. I prefer the first three, but this is a wild swing. pic.twitter.com/7i3n5qUvOq

Given the hype surrounding The Matrix Resurrections, there was always a good chance it would firmly split opinion amongst fans of the prior trilogy of pictures. When looking at the critical response to the film, it very much seems like different people will take different things from this return to the Matrix - with your own personal response seemingly coming down to how much you favour a strong love story over strong action sequences.
Starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick and Jonathan Groff, The Matrix Resurrections hits all major markets on 22 December, with Australia and New Zealand getting the film on 26 December, and then Italy finally getting the movie on New Year's Day.
