The X-Files: Most Important TV Adaptation Of All Time

X-Files I, like many others, am looking forward to this summer because my two favorite paranormal investigators will be on the big screen doing what they do best. While The X Files is the number one show on FOX right now and the movie is most likely to be a hit, many probably don't understand why this is the TV adaptation that could change the landscape for television and movies. Creator Chris Carter and others are promising a much bigger and "grander" version of paranormal crime solving for the upcoming film currently being referred to as Project Blackwood. Legends like Martin Landau and Blythe Danner are lining the cast around the already cast Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) among others. The most surprising move here is that Carter and company are filming this movie while the hit TV show is still airing and being filmed. This movie will come out at the height of the show's success (though the climbing ratings may prove that statement false next season). FOX is attempting to take blockbuster TV and create blockbuster movies. TV adaptations are a relatively uncharted territory right now which is why the X Files film is so important. It's mostly uncharted waters for America's favorite crime fighters. It's a big gamble for FOX and Carter since the film reportedly has a high budget due to Carter and director Rob Bowman wanting as many locations for the film as possible. If The X Files film were to be successful, it would be the start of a new era for television and film. Hit television shows would be able to continue their runs and tell bigger and bolder stories in films to be released while the show is on hiatus. We could even get films based off of shows that are of a different genre than X Files. If this film is successful, what's to stop FOX from taking a gamble on, say, a Simpsons movie? On the other hand, if The X Files film is unsuccessful then we will probably see no film adaptations of TV shows. TV will remain TV and film will remain film. No Frasier Crane for the big screen. Sorry ladies. After all, FOX is taking a gamble with a big budget and big summer competition (when else would the film come out?). They are not going to make a gamble twice if they lose the first one. And this, ladies and gentleman, is why this summer's X Files movie is the most important TV adaptation of all time. This film will determine whether crossovers from television to film (or film to television) are to continue or cease and desist. That's a lot of weight on the shoulders of Mulder and Scully who are already trying to save the world from an impending alien invasion. However, no matter what happens there is good news: after the season finale of X Files, we X Philes need not worry. Come summer, we will have a "grander" adventure for our heroes. And, hey, even if it sucks there's always next season. Are you excited for the X-Files adaptation? Share your thoughts below.
