Who knew that Chris Hemsworth would be such a good comedy actor? Well, everyone should have really, as his MCU dynamic shifted markedly as soon as he teamed up with The Avengers. There was already hints of fish out of water, culture clash comedy in Thor, but teaming up with the other "more normal" superheroes dialled that up and he was inevitably forced into a more comic position.

Taking that as a foundation, Ragnarok runs with Thor as a comedy character - or at least a straight-thinking character who doesn't realise he's hilarious. He doesn't quip or joke, he's just naturally very funny, and has his tongue thrust firmly into his cheek most of the time.

For some, this will attract accusations of frivolity, but there's no compromise on Thor's arc - he still travels from adversity to heroic revelation and finds his place, which is what Ragnarok is about as much as anything. This is his journey of true worthiness ("the special stuff was inside you all along!" sort of thing) and there's no reason it shouldn't be funny along the way.
