5. LA Confidential

This is really where the cream rises to the top in this list. All of the films leading up to this point are obviously great in their own right but these final four are interchangeable. LA Confidential is a gorgeous noir send up from Curtis Hanson, directing the James Ellroy novel of the same name. It involves corruption, violence, and bloodshed of the fresh-faced Los Angeles police force, with stellar work from Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, Guy Pearce, Kevin Spacey, and many many more. LA Confidential is also an elegant film, blending the meta-world of Hollywood stardom and hard-boiled noir done so often and so well in the 30s and 40s.
