Scream 7 marked the point at which even the slasher series' most ardent apologists had to basically admit that the wheels had come off the enterprise.
With the faces of the new Scream era, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, being fired from and quitting the sequel respectively, production company Spyglass shelled out an eye-watering $7 million to get original star Neve Campbell back, after a low-ball salary offer left her sitting out Scream VI.
It goes without saying that the Scream 7 we got was a hurriedly cobbled-together plan b - a sequel which bears the scars of its rushed development, given that it features the single worst Ghostface reveal and motive of the entire franchise.
And even though Scream 7 turned out to be the series' highest-grossing entry yet, in creative terms it leaves little hope for Scream 8 to offer much worthwhile.
Bringing Sid back again is such a tired and played-out choice, her new daughter character isn't interesting enough to carry the torch, and now Courteney Cox is angling to direct the new movie.
Between all this and the likelihood that Scream 8 is rushed into production to capitalise on the previous film's dynamite box office, it's easy to have no faith at all in this next installment being a much-needed return to form.
