20 Upcoming Movies That Just Got Cancelled

Gladiator II Denzel Washington

Back in 2023, it was announced that Denzel Washington was set to reunite with his Training Day and The Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua for a biopic of the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal.

Earlier this year, shooting on the Netflix-produced epic was slated to start in Italy this summer, with pre-production and location scouting well underway.

However, in June Netflix decided to pause pre-production on Hannibal due to concerns over the film's ballooning budget, which had allegedly crossed the $200 million mark, prompting producers Fuqua and Washington to try and find a way to make it with a lower price tag.

But in a subsequent interview with the film's cinematographer, the great Robert Richardson, the film was said to be "effectively dead," suggesting that Netflix has quietly pulled the plug during this period of "pause."

It's a shame, because a Fuqua-directed, Washington-led Hannibal movie would've been a wild sight to see, but that budget for a streaming release is also bonkers.
