Valerian Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

1. It's Luc Besson's Best Film Since The Fifth Element

While it's not exactly a shocking claim given Luc Besson's rather mediocre output of the last two decades, Valerian is by far his most ambitious, exciting and memorable movie since The Fifth Element.

It's no coincidence that this is similarly a stylistically incredible sci-fi flick with a demented sense of humour, and after 20 years of films that just haven't quite hit the mark, it's refreshing to see him firing on all cylinders like this, even if the movie is naturally far from perfect.

It's just a shame Besson won't get a chance to work in this world again, what with the film colossally bombing at the box office already, but at least it's proof he can still direct the Hell out of a monstrously-budgeted romp.
