Venom Trailer Reactions: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
6. A Complex "Hero"
There was never much of a chance that we'd see a clone of the Eddie Brock we saw in Spider-Man 3 (in the shape of Topher Grace), but it still counts as a positive that we're seemingly getting a far more nuanced, complex Brock than we've seen on screen previously.
As hinted strongly all the way through production, Hardy's Brock is likely to be an anti-hero figure - or even a hero in human form who ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time - who is infected by the symbiote and is torn apart by moral conflict.
Having him play the lead and not the villain to a Spider-Man means we necessarily get to see more of that conflict and it is way more interesting to see a version of Brock and Venom more closely tied to the idea of him as a reluctant Punisher like hero than just a pantomime baddy. And there are certainly big hints that that's what we're getting here in the trailer.
