Venom Trailer Reactions: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

7. There's No Spidey-Manipulation
Just as it was probably slightly tempting to show off Venom properly (which would have been good for a lot of people), Sony probably weighed up the idea of dropping a huge Spider-Man hint into the trailer as well. After all, Marvel's big money Spidey return Homecoming took a fortune at the box office and Disney's Spidey merch sales (always in the top three for Disney) still suggest there's a huge audience out there for him. Why wouldn't Sony want to try and capitalise on a bit of that?
Mercifully, Sony realised that that would have been an unnecessary distraction and instead what we have here is a sort of anti-Spider-Man movie. It's in no way pulpy, the colours are almost provocatively aimed at a Fincher/Nolan aesthetic and without the Venom branding you could reasomably assume it's just a Tom Hardy horror.
Whether you believe that's the right approach is up to you, but Sony not having even a vague hint to Spider-Man in here is a big plus.
