Vince Vaughn: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

5 Performances That Sucked...

5. Norman Bates - Psycho

Whoever optioned a remake of Hitchcock's classic, genre-defining Psycho should probably have been immediately stricken from the annals of Hollywood history. In a market obsessed with remaking and rebooting, this was pretty much the lowest point of the lot, and makes absolutely no sense as either a creative of financial decision. Nobody emerged from the project with any positives, and the film is still widely heralded as one of the worst, and most pointless movies to emerge in the 90s. Is it garbage? Not exactly. It€™s a shot-for-shot remake that adds absolutely nothing to the already perfect original film from Alfred Hitchcock. So why even make it at all?

Vince Vaughn filled the shoes of Anthony Perkins, whose performance has long since moved into transcendentally important status. The problem is that the casting could have been brilliant - like Heath Ledger as The Joker brilliant - but Vaughn's personality simply doesn't sit well with the character. He still retains that spark of arrogance that feels so at odds with Bates as a character, or at least which makes comparisons with Perkins' performance wholly unfavourable.

He tries too hard to make Bates seem fidgety and weird, losing all nuance that made him such an interesting character in the first place. Perhaps the director pushed him in this direction or maybe this role was too much to handle that early on in his career, but either way, it€™s a forgettable performance from a forgettable and regrettable movie.
