One of the most enticingly premised genre films of the year, The Unknown is a psychological fantasy horror-thriller in which a lonely photographer, David (Niels Schneider), has sex with a woman (Léa Seydoux) only to wake up the next morning having inexplicably switched bodies with her.
Somewhat in the vein of It Follows, Arthur Harari's film is said to revolve around an entity which body-swaps its victims post-coitus, leaving said victims scrambling to reclaim their own bodies.
How's that for an attention-grabbing setup that immediately invites a whole ton of questions?
Reviews since its Cannes premiere have skewed mixed-positive, with near-universal praise for Seydoux's central performance, though its bold, singular execution of such a twisted premise has also had its fair number of detractors.
Either way, that something so creatively bizarre can get made in the current conservative filmmaking climate - let alone premiere at Cannes of all places - is a cause for celebration.
