4. Scream 2
The second in the Scream series that builds on the most meta commentary in film, Scream 2 takes all the good stuff from the first iteration and builds on them fantastically.
Whilst slightly derivative, as every sequel must be and as Scream 2 is very aware of, this film still stands as an excellent horror movie with some fantastic, theatrical sequences - quite literally when it comes to the college performance Sidney finds herself a part of.
It's a funny and dark murder mystery, mocking its own franchise by setting up the spoof of a spoof 'Stab' movie in the narrative as a way of going that one level higher with all its internal circle jerking about playing on the genre. Scream 2 got exactly what it needed to do and gave us an excellent addition to the franchise, one that the third movie all but forgot. But we've already covered that bad, bad ground.
