What Does The Ending Of Logan Really Mean?

9. The Ending

Logan Trailer Wolverine Laura
20th Century Fox

Having initially escaped the Reavers, Wolverine, Laura and Charles find themselves holed up temporarily at a farm - owned by the Munsons (including Eriq La Salle from ER) - where their sanctuary is interrupted by X-24, a fully grown clone of Wolverine that Pierce's boss Dr Zander Rice (Richard E Grant) created to get around the fact that trying to teach child clones to be evil weapons doesn't work because they're all inherently good. How unShakespearean.

The younger, sleeker Wolverine #2 kills the Munsons and Charles (devastatingly), then goes to town on Logan before he can escape with Laura thanks to Caliban's heroic sacrifice and head towards their sanctuary on the Canadian border, where the escaped mutant kids were told to meet before crossing the border. There they meet the kids, all without their nurses and led by Rictor and plan to cross the border without Logan, who has a sudden attack of Han Solo pretend-not-to-care-itis.

He comes to his senses when he realises the kids have been found by the Reavers, Pierce and Rice and runs to assist them in the forest, where he ultimately finds X-24 again, after killing Rice mid-evil-monologue and the kids suddenly remember they're trained killers and take down Donald Pierce in the grimmest way possible.

Wolverine and X-24 go at it again, with the former sustaining mortal wounds as a distraction for Laura to shoot the younger model in the head with a deus ex machina adamantium bullet Logan kept around in case he wanted to commit suicide. He dies, then Logan dies after Laura calls him daddy and buries him and literally the entire audience has the rest of their week ruined.
