What Next For The MCU After Avengers: Endgame?
5. Disney+
When Disney announced that they would be launching their own streaming service, it was virtually a given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be one of the key selling points. And by taking their small-screen projects exclusively in-house, the television shows will no doubt tie closer to the movies than ever before.
The five Netflix shows technically existed in the same continuity as the movies but it was barely acknowledged, and now all of them have unsurprisingly been cancelled after Disney announced their rival service. Agents of SHIELD has somehow managed to secure a seventh season despite hardly anybody watching it, while the Hulu-based shows will probably be fine because the Mouse House owns most of that company too.
So how closely will the Disney+ shows follow the continuity established on the big screen? According to Kevin Feige they will be 'entirely interwoven with both the current MCU, the past MCU, and the future of the MCU'. So pretty closely then.
That was to be expected really when the shows announced so far focus on well-established characters like Loki, Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson. The fallout from Avengers: Endgame may have left these characters in very different places, yet all of their small-screen stories will be canon in the MCU.
Feige also revealed that we should expect characters from the movies to pop up in the limited series', and vice versa. With the film and television departments of the MCU set to work closer in sync than ever before, signing up for Disney+ will be a necessity for the franchise's ardent fanbase to follow the stories of their favorite characters both in the cinema and at home. That's capitalism, folks.
