What Song Is Used In The Wonder Woman 1984 Trailer?
"It's all art!"
Wonder Woman just went 1980s.
The first trailer for the upcoming sequel packs in a lot of information, including villain reveals, the return of a dead character and the revelation of a new but also old look for the titular hero. It's colourful, charming and the action looks insanely good and it helps that the trailer is packaged so well.
A big part of that success comes down to the musical choice, which holds its 1980s colours as a flag high above its head. And naturally any song that lands with such an immediate impact will have fans - particularly younger ones - rushing to the Internet to find out who made it.
The answer in this case is New Order and the song is an exceptional recut of their classic "Blue Monday." It's one of the most iconic examples of post-post-punk synthwave that came out of the bustling Manchester music scene (a scene wonderfully captured in 24 Hour Party People, if you want another movie to add to your watchlist) and for many, it is the most evocative 80s sound of all.
The Wonder Woman 1984 version has far grander production added to it, with epic soundtrack soundscapes added to the back of it and an orchestra, but it hasn't lost what makes it such a classic of the era.
Hopefully, the period setting of the sequel to Patty Jenkins' great stand-alone will go heavy on a period-appropriate soundtrack. The implications of the trailer seem to be that she'll be introducing the somehow-not-dead Steve Trevor to the world of the 1980s in a pleasant inversion of him introducing her to the world of men in the first film, partly by "explaining" the culture. If that doesn't take in her giving him a crash course in synths and 80s pop, they're missing a trick.
They've certainly made a good start with "Blue Monday" and there's huge potential out there for a great soundtrack hand-picking the best of the era.
