Why Warner Bros Should Still Make Godfather-esque Al Capone Trilogy With Tom Hardy!

Was one of the projects David Yates turned down to make The Stand but there is still a short window for this film to happen with Hardy if WB hurry up and find a replacement!

Whilst it's good news to hear that Warner Bros are making moves with latter day Harry Potter sequels director David Yatesto adapt Stephen King's supernatural epic novel The Stand into a multi-film franchise, there is a sour note to the deal that I made mention in my news write-up earlier and this is in regards to a project we might have lost because of it. Last month, news broke that the acting chameleon Tom Hardy had become attracted to a character piece biopic of the notorious Chicago criminal gangster Al Capone that carried the working title of Cicero and that at the time David Yates was getting interested in making. The only hitch to the exciting deal was that if it was going to happen, it would have to get in front of camera's to film before The Dark Knight Rises star went off to Australia to shoot his role in the new Mad Max movie in the Spring. Which meant realistically the first film in the trilogy would have to be a go-project in the next two months, just around the time Hardy is finished with Batman, or it won't possibly happen until 2013, if at all with Hardy in the leading role. Which to us now that he has been mentioned... we are not sure we can get over the fact that it would be anyone else chomping at the cigar and wearing the fedora. With the proposed director Yates now working on another project, the clock is ticking for Warner Bros to find a replacement and we are sincerely hoping that they are actively searching and they aren't going to put the sword to Hardy's attachment here. There's so many good directors out there looking for a good project to get moving on... Frank Darabont for one as we mentioned yesterday.... but if WB put the word out, I'm sure they would find somebody suitable for this in no time. Finally, here€™s a character piece that could be molded for Hardy €“ stepping into the shoes of the likes of Rod Steiger, Jason Robards and Robert De Niro €“ but like Johnny Depp did with Dillinger, making the man truly his own. Three films of Hardy depicting the rise and fall of Capone, this could be something for the ages, and it could happen if all the pieces fall into the right place! This new Capone biopic is actually an old project, resurrected. It was originally birthed from the pen of The Wild Bunch writer Walon Green back in the 70's, right at the time Francis Ford Coppola was making The Godfather. Warner Bros, who are right now making a conscious effort to get back into the gangster genre that made their illustrious studio name with productions like 40's set L.A. Confidential-esque crime drama Tales From The Gangster Squad - have made the film a priority, which probably means they won't sit on this project waiting for Hardy if nothing can be done over the next few weeks. That is such a shame because Hardy as Capone would frikkin rule€ he has the screen presence to play a man who was €˜Untouchable€™, who acted like he had the power of kings and it€™s the kind of meatier role he will relish. And there's no better time for him as he has already packed on some of the necessary pounds for playing Bane and for WB, the first film would hit just after he has become even more of a worldwide phenomenon for his role in Batman. I would seriously kill for this movie to happen....
