The opening mission to space hinges on the X-Men's ability to fly into space to rescue the stranded astronauts on the Endeavor. Right from the start, we're told it wouldn't work, because Hank McCoy keeps telling everyone that the X-Jet isn't built for space journeys. He says it several times and everyone ignores him.

With that warning, you'd think that the concerns might come back to haunt the team in some way, so it's a surprise that the X-Jet, which is not built to go to space, manages perfectly fine in space, despite the person who literally built it not for space warning that it won't work in space and everyone ignoring him as being over-cautious.

Having started from the position of piloting a non-space-worthy plane into space, it shouldn't be a surprise that the NASA mission isn't exactly the smartest mission of all time. But it's really something that the answer to stopping the shuttle from spinning out of control when there is literally a hugely powerful telekinetic mutant available is to simply shoot the engine.

Yes, it would put the engine out of order, but traditionally shooting something full of highly flammable fuel with a laser blast isn't the safest approach to anything. Particularly when you're trying to save the people inside the thing you're shooting.
