X-Men: Supernova - 10 Big Questions We Need Answering
2. What Will It Add To The Franchise?
This is a question that Fox needs to ask themselves, and Simon Kinberg needs to address in his script. What's unique about this film? If it's not the basic premise (which, as aforementioned, could be similar to The Last Stand's Jean storyline), then what is it? What makes this film stand out? What does it add to the franchise?
After the blubbering mess of Apocalypse, there's no point rushing out another X-Men film just for the sake of it. There needs to be a USP here, something that film fans will spot in the trailers and be intrigued enough to shell out the ticket price for. Apocalypse was a big dent in the reputation of this franchise, which had been rebuilt so well with First Class and Days Of Future Past. To correct course, there will need to be something special here.
First Class had young X-Men. Days Of Future Past had time-travel. What does Supernova have? A Deadpool cameo? A dark tone? Connections to other films and TV shows? More 90s nostalgia than you could shake a Furby at?
A combination of all those things, and an epic adaptation the Dark Phoenix Saga, might be enough to get moviegoers back on side.
