X-Men: Apocalypse - 15 Questions Left By The Stupidest X-Movie Ever

9. What Happened To Mystique Stryker?

The main reason seeing Wolverine in that final trailer for Apocalypse was so exciting wasn't because we'd get to Hugh Jackman slashing at people with CGI claws again (we've had that in six out of seven previous movies), but because it promised the pay-off to one of the most intriguing dangling threads from Days Of Future Past; that, after all the Sentinel and assassination stuff calmed down, Mystique posed as Stryker and took possession of Wolverine.

This was massive, a bold step forward that promised the newly-founded timeline wouldn't be just more of the same; Raven, who in this canon is pretty much a good guy, was going to be somehow linked to the creation of Weapon X!

It's rather indicative of Apocalypse's approach to the franchise that not only is this not referenced at all, but the ignorance of it is actively flaunted; Stryker turns up halfway through, kidnaps Mystique without a word and takes her to Alkali Lake, where he's already given Logan his metal claws. No explanation, no allusion to some inter-rim event, just the waste of a great cliffhanger ending.

Producer Simon Kinberg has allegedly provided an answer, but it's about as satisfying as Maz Kanata's "story for another time" gumbo about the lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
