10 "Assumed To Fail" Video Games That DESTROYED Expectations

5. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

Mario and the Rabbids may be the furthest things from each other. One is a beloved Nintendo property that revolutionized video game platformers. And the other is an obscure Ubisoft title feature the precursor to the Minions made primarily to annoy the heck out of parents.

So when it was announced that there would be a crossover of Mario and the Rabbids, many fans just didn't know what to think. The game looked cute, but people just weren't sold on the fact the Rabbids would be annoying the likes of Princess Peach and Luigi.

That mixed in with the fact this game was basically going to be XCOM but with Mario and Rabbids in cosplay was enough to turn most players off this game. Even an endorsement by Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, wasn't enough to really convince people that this game would be good.

but lo and behold, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle ended up being a very solid game. The XCOM style of gameplay wasn't as big of a failure as people thought, and the Rabbids were actually cute and funny in this game. There was an interesting story, and a surprising amount of care and depth put into the game.

Overall Mario + Rabbids may sound awful on paper, but in practice, it's actually a really fun time. This game almost opens the door for all sorts of other crossover Mario games, though that may have to wait for another list.
