Throughout the past few years, battle royales have become a prominent fixture of the gaming landscape and competitive scene. Alongside the heavyweights of Fortnite and Warzone, other developers have put their own spin on the formula to capitalise on the trend. The result has seen unnecessary misfires like Fallout 76’s Nuclear Winter alongside unexpected hits including Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt.

However, none of these would exist if it weren’t for PUBG: Battlegrounds.

Formerly known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, this shooter came out of nowhere and took the world by storm when it arrived in early access in March 2017.

Dropping into a map alongside 99 other players was an exhilarating thrill while scavenging for better gear to increase your chances of survival knowing that another player could be anywhere made for heartpounding gameplay. Adding to the growing sense of tension was the shrinking map size which forced combatants into closer proximity to each other until only one was left standing.

Despite PUBG’s plethora of bugs and technical issues, the lure of the coveted chicken dinner was too intoxicating to resist.

PUBG may not be as big today, but its legacy nevertheless lives on in every other battle royale.
