8. Mario Kart 8
Like Super Smash Bros. Wii U, Mario Kart 8 might be a late entry in an extensive series, but it's proof of Nintendo's ability to continue to improve its games. Not only is the game graphically gorgeous, it's also the best Mario Kart game ever made.
Why? Well, there are a number of reasons. For a start, its "gimmick" just works: Mario and co. can activate anti-gravity plates which allow them to drive up walls, soar around corkscrews and plummet down massive hills. The thing that makes it so fun is that the gameplay has barely changed: its simple to pick up and play, whilst also looking awesome and having depth once you get stuck in.
Not only that, but the game has the most Mario Kart levels available in a single title, and many of the best courses, too. The vast majority of the beautiful music is orchestral and you can even play as Link if you download the DLC.
