10 Amazing Video Games With Terrible Open Worlds

7. RAGE 2

Elder SCROLLS Oblivion
Bethesda

Rage 2 is one of the best first-person shooters you'll find. It's fast-paced, challenging and oh-so stylish. And its open world is one of most beautiful you'll ever see

If only that beautiful world could do something - anything - other than just stand there and look pretty.

Rage 2's world is incredibly diverse, featuring wastelands, jungles, spooky swamps - and it's huge, to boot. And, unless you're a compulsive completionist, most of the time you spend in it will just be driving from one mission to the next.

Sure, the map is absolutely packed with bandit outposts to clear, traveling convoys to take down, and... other things. Other activities mainly consist of repetitive optional bosses, hidden currency, and the occasional race. Even the NPC cars seem to travel endlessly around a pre-set route, devoid of anything resembling AI.

The rote nature of these diversions combined with their massive volume quickly makes them feel like chores. On top of that you have several progression systems that share currency, which makes doing these chores all the more necessary just to grind.

The game likely would have been a bigger success if they had simply put these shooting mechanics into a more linear frame.
