Getting veteran film director and horror buff Guillermo del Toro to make a video game seems like a no brainer. Famously geek-friendly (he directed the Hellboy films and last year's nerdtastic robots vs monsters blockbuster Pacific Rim), with a keen visual sense and source of constant innovation, we honestly weren't all that surprised when it was announced he would have a hand in the new Silent Hill game alongside Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima. The playable teaser they released for the PS4 had all the hallmarks of a del Toro horror, too, favouring atmosphere and psychological tricks to gore and jump scares - something he's stuck to for the films he's directed, like The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, and stuff he produced such as The Orphanage and Mama. If anything, it's weird it took so long for Guillermo to get involved with a horror game. Well, looks can be deceiving, because Silent Hills isn't the first such title he's been involved in developing. Before that he teamed up with THQ to work on inSane, planned to be the first in a trilogy of survival horror games. "I want to take players to a place they have never seen before, where every single action makes them question their own senses of morality and reality," said del Toro back in 200. "THQ and Volition, Inc are equally excited to make this vision of a completely new game universe into a reality." Excited though they were, that didn't stop THQ from going bust and cancelling the project. Apparently it might still get released in some form, but we're not holding our breath. Which is a shame, because the trailer didn't reveal much, but it definitely looked bloody terrifying.
