10 Announced Video Games That Mysteriously Disappeared
7. Super Mario 128
Super Mario 128 is one of Nintendo’s most
interesting recent ventures. It appeared at Spaceworld 2000, an odd little tech
demo designed to show off the capabilities of the GameCube.
The concept? Well, 128 tiny little Marios, running around a sparse world that was manipulated in various ways. Being a tech demo, of course, it never saw release as a full title, though its inspiration can be seen in several of the titles Nintendo has released since.
It’s plain to see that the original idea of Super Mario 128 is alive and well in the Pikmin series, in which the titular plant-people can indirectly controlled by Captain Olimar. The fascinating physics of Super Mario 128 could also have been adapted for Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel, in which our hero circumnavigates small planetoids.
It’s a shame that such a quirky project didn’t receive a full release in its own right (talk of it becoming a Super Mario 64 sequel for the ill-fated 64 DD also amounted to nothing), but at least its spirit lives on.
