10 Announced Video Games That Mysteriously Disappeared
6. Star Fox Arcade
Now, here’s a fascinating case. In 2002, Nintendo
announced the game that would become Star Fox: Assault, a Namco-developed
collaboration that featured both TPS and rail shooting sections. The futuristic
shooter released in 2005 for the GameCube and fared rather well.
To hear some tell it, though, a similar arcade title was also in the works. This title had the potential to use the O.R.B.S. (Over Reality Booster System) arcade technology, Namco’s ridiculous baby, which would encapsulate the player and engross them in the game in an experience sure to be equal parts awesome and terrifying.
As incredible as it would’ve been to have zipped an Arwing around in that sort of immersive environment, it hardly needs saying that arcades just weren’t ready for this sort of thing at the time. Heck, in the early 2000s, arcades weren’t ready for anything except to be put out to pasture.
As a result, the game was never made (if it was ever going to be). Star Fox: Assault is the closest we’ll ever get to experiencing how this lost potential title may have played.
