10 Awesome Cancelled Video Games From Famous Franchises

9. Fallout 3: Van Buren

One of the most famous games in history that never came into (full) existence, the original, Interplay-published Fallout 3 (codenamed Van Buren) was being developed in 2002 by the great RPG developer, Black Isle Studios.

The game was unceremoniously canned, however, when Interplay decided to focus more on console games like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, which has to go down as one of the worst publisher decisions in video game history.

Van Buren was played from a top-down perspective, but with 3D graphics which allowed players to freely rotate the camera. It was to take place in Utah and Colorado, against the backdrop of a war between the Brotherhood of Steel and New California Republic, and was at such an advanced stage of development that a playable tech demo can be downloaded from the internet.

Not all was lost of Van Buren's promising storyline however, as Obsidian went on to include large chunks of the lore in 2010's Fallout: New Vegas.
