10 Awesome Moments That Defined The N64
1. The Moon (Majora's Mask)
Majora’s Mask – arguably, the darkest entry in the series – is many people’s absolute favourite. In the game, players are tasked with preventing the destruction of Termina – a parallel version of Hyrule overcome by darkness – in which the moon itself is descending towards the ground, threatening the utter annihilation of civilisation.
Fortunately, the hero is blessed with the magical ability to
reverse time, reliving the last three days continuously until the danger can be
averted.
Looming over the player throughout the game is perhaps the single most disturbing image in gaming history, the moon – complete with piercing eyes, a gaping mouth and a steadfast gaze, moving downward towards the ground.
Honestly, its unapologetic design gives me chills to this very day, cementing its legacy as one of the creepiest, most iconic images in the entire series, and one of the most enduring symbols in gaming history.
Moreover, the image of the moon crashing into the planet isn’t just a standout moment in the series, but the platform from which it was born. In many ways, it defined the N64 as a console of limitless potential, in which the uninhibited imaginations of creative visionaries could be brought to life in stunningly rendered, immersive three-dimensions.
