10 Awesome Sega Mega Drive Games You've Never Played

2. Micro Machines Military

Rolling out for battle in late 1996, Micro Machines Military was an inspired spin-off that took all the best bits from previous games in the series; challenging game modes, tricksy tracks and those characters fans had grown to love, albeit this time in combat fatigues - and deployed one glaring omission from previous entries in the franchise: the ability to shoot. This simple modification to the game's oeuvre of mini vehicles added a never before seen dimension to gameplay (previously, players had been shunting each other off toilet rims, tables and worktops since the very beginning) where a carefully aimed shot across a muddy farmyard could send first place spinning into a puddle thus changing the outcome of a race. Mario Kart will always have the purple shell, but with this exemplary racer players had the chance to dispatch their competitors with some serious precision aiming. Sadly, Micro Machines Military arrived at a time when the Sega Saturn and PlayStation consoles were embroiled in their own war for supremacy and, given the game was only released in Europe, it's safe to say that this one remained only a blip on many gamers' radars.
