10 Awesome Video Game Features We Can't Believe Got Cancelled
2. Shoot Your Own Handholds For Traversal - Uncharted 4
Naughty Dog are such engineering magicians that each of their games feels like it's exactly the game it was always intended to be, but that really isn't true at all.
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was tinkered with extensively during production, and by far the most creative idea to hit the cutting room floor was allowing players to shoot holes in the environment which could then be used as handholds for traversal.
But the game's co-director Neil Druckmann added that the feature was cancelled at the prototyping stage due to difficulty implementing it into the wider experience:
"It just felt like it was hard to create the right language for that, and make sure you always had ammo for those places. But as a prototype, it was a really fun mechanic."
It's a shame, because with the right execution - which Naughty Dog is surely capable of - this could be a game-changer for exploration in games like Uncharted.
Druckmann clearly isn't going anywhere, though, so there's every possibility we'll see the mechanic show up in a future Uncharted or The Last of Us game, or whatever the hell Naughty Dog is making next.
