10 Awesome Video Game Levels That Ended Painfully Soon

3. Exultia - Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal Revenant
Id Software

Though 2016's DOOM was a welcome return to form for the series, Doom Eternal cranked everything up a notch. Rather than dealing with more of the same, this instalment emphasised tactical combat, strategic enemies, and deep lore. It incorporated new features, including wall climbing, a fully explorable hub word, and obliterating monsters with a sword.

But one of the coolest parts is when The Doom Slayer enters Exultia and takes control of a high-flying demon to collect an out-of-reach artefact. Playing as the Slayer is a blast, but it's not as satisfying as using jump jets to shoot hundreds of feet in the air and annihilating Imps and Mancubi with shoulder-mounted rocket launchers.

The mission occurs early in the main campaign, so players may assume they'll get the chance to possess another hellish creature in the future. Even though it would've been sensational to take control of a Cacodemon or a Marauder, Exultia is the only time you play as a demon.

Due to the positive reception of this section, you'd think id Software would implement a similar idea in the follow-up, Doom: The Dark Ages. Sadly, that wasn't the case. Hell, it'd be cool to play an entire Doom game from the point of view of a demon.

Maybe some day.
