2017's What Remains of Edith Finch is an emotionally enthralling story-telling adventure game, and still one of the best examples of how video games can be presented as genuine works of art.

Giant Sparrow's storyline revolves around a woman named Edith and her Finch family, who have supposedly been afflicted with a supernatural curse that causes one member of each generation to die in dramatic circumstances. The game is told through a series anthology of mini-experiences players can uncover by navigating around the Finch estate, with Edith's narration filling in the blanks of the curse as they progress.

There is never any real explanation given to the curse, though its effects are certainly shown in truly heartbreaking ways throughout the game. The curse of the Fitch family is front and centre throughout the playthrough, but there's never even a representation of it in play for players to give reference to.

And yet, its presence powerfully hangs over the game at all times and successfully creates a dramatic atmosphere that keeps players hooked throughout the story.

It's the mystery of the curse that helps make What Remains of Edith Finch a classic in the exploration sub-genre, a feat even more impressive when players finish the game not even knowing what shape it takes.
