Mortal Kombat has a long history of bad and good releases when it comes to games – and not a whole lot of good when it comes to movie releases. The last MK movie came out in 1997 and was described by MK founders Ed Boon and John Tobias as their worst moment in the history of the franchise.

But with the MK games getting a few good entries lately and the 2011 miniseries, Legacy, getting good reviews overall, it was only a matter of time before a new feature length film came to be.

Though some believed the film to be stuck in development hell since Kevin Tancharoen's departure from the project in 2013, the plan has progressed. In 2016 it was announced that Simon McQuoid would come in to make his directorial debut and Greg Russo was hired to write the script saying, in February of 2019 that the script was finally finished.

Intended to totally reboot the film franchise it is supposed to begin filming in Australia later this year for a March 2021 release. Ryan Reynolds is rumored to be the choice for the role of Johnny Cage and Jean-Claude Van Damme's daughter Bianca is rumored to play Mileena. It will be interesting to see who ultimately joins the cast when the film hits full-production mode in the coming year.
