10 Awesome Video Games You Had No Idea Were Getting Movies

7. Sleeping Dogs

Mario And Luigi
Square Enix

2012's Sleeping Dogs went through a lot in its development, including a company bankruptcy that caused it to be renamed – having once been planned as an entry in the True Crime series of games. Starring Donnie Yen, of Ip Man fame, as undercover detective Wei Shen. Yen stated on social media that the film was currently in production as of February of 2018, though updates have been less forthcoming since then.

It doesn't have a set release date and hopefully hasn't fallen victim to the same issues the game had. Activision had originally dropped the title as it believed the game couldn't compete with a crowded market of Grand Theft Autos and Red Dead Redemptions and SquareEnix stepped in to take over production. Though the game sold well at 1.75 million copies, it was still called a 'failure', even though it got many good reviews.

A bit of good news is that Yen announced the film has been joined by a screenwriter and is set to start filming sometime this year, presumably now that he's done with Disney's live-action Mulan remake.
