For most of us, making our way through a game once by conventional means is achievement enough, but for the more hardcore and dedicated players out there, simply skating through casually just will not do; they yearn for a more substantial challenge, or more to the point, they're masochists who want to put themselves through sheer gaming Hell. Whether acquiescing to an obscure difficulty hidden within the game, or setting an arbitrary challenge for themselves, players have flagellated themselves under these conditions just for the prestige of saying, "Yeah,
I did it, and
you didn't". And fair play to them; though they've doubtless wasted hours of their lives figuring out the correct route, anyone capable of beating a game in such an ingenious way is liable to earn themselves at least a few minutes of Internet fame, or in the most spectacular cases, full-on web celebrity (within the gaming world, at least). Here are 10 awesomely unconventional ways people beat video games...
10. Beating Resident Evil With Just A Knife
The original Resident Evil game on the PS1 was the first game to ever truly scare the crap out of me, and really, it continues to do so today, and that's with a fairly generous array of guns and first aid sprays that Jill's expended inventory allows. Some players, however, having mastered the relatively short game, decided that the enemies therein just weren't challenging enough, and so the only option? Play through the game with just a knife. Right... Generally players attempting this sort of run, aside from being certifiably insane, will already be extremely skilled at evading zombies, such that they need only knife the most necessary enemies that get in their way, though of course, this gets tricky when the bosses show up. When fighting Yawn, the giant snake for instance, players will need to run in a rectangular pattern while slashing to avoid death, and just one timing screw-up can be the end of you. Of course, the game
forces you to use a Rocket Launcher on the Tyrant at the end, but other than that, it's a challenge recommended for only the most self-loathing of gamers.
