10 Awful Villains That Ruined Amazing Video Games
5. The Tyrants - Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is in many respects a wonderful game filled with satisfyingly nuanced, complex gameplay systems which allow players to go about missions with a high degree of personal agency.
It's just a shame the game's damn villains have to get in the way and ruin it, right?
Human Revolution was widely criticised upon release for the inclusion of several boss fights against members of a mercenary outfit known as the Tyrants.
While players reasonably expected that their heavy investment in stealth abilities would allow them to dispatch these bosses through non-lethal means, Eidos made no such provision, forcing ill-equipped players to struggle through combat-heavy encounters they hadn't readied themselves for.
The backlash was severe, with reports eventually emerging that Eidos outsourced these fights to another developer due to time constraints, which explains why they clash so jarringly with the rest of the game.
Human Revolution's Director's Cut did eventually "fix" the battles to provide players with more options to succeed, but it's still painfully evident how antithetical these encounters are to the game's core design philosophy.
For a game that basically encouraged the player to think about every decision they made, then forcing them to cheese their way through the boss fights was a massive letdown, especially if you played it on launch before Eidos offered a remedy.
