It's fair to say that video games have come a long way in just about every sense since they first appeared bright eyes and bushy tailed in all their pixelated glory many moons ago.

Since the video game industry really began to focus on creating fully fleshed human characters back in the 90s, the way women have been shown in them has changed drastically, as many started as nothing more than eye candy and side characters.

Today, thankfully, is much different, as the characters on this list couldn't be further from the stereotypes of old. Bold, courageous and all round badass, these women really do show that anything a man can do, a woman can.

From icons like Jill Valentine and Lara Croft, to more recent entries like Aloy, their importance can not be understated. With more women than ever headlining both triple A games and the indie space, let's celebrate those who truly paved the way for a new era.

With that said, let's take a look at just a handful of video game women who's characters, storylines, and generally ability to kick ass shine above all others.

10. Jill Valentine - Resident Evil Series

Jill Valentine is one of the original and founding women in video games. Having had a career spanning twenty-four years and countless games, Valentine is no stranger to the spotlight. This is shown no better than in the recent Resident Evil 3 remake.

She is an extremely capable and smart person, often actively seeking justice for others and against the crimes of the evil Umbrella Corporation. Handy with a pistol and in hand to hand combat, Valentine knows how to take care of herself, and is more often than not getting herself out of sticky situations.

Loyal to no end, Valentine even sacrificed herself to save Chris Redfield. She then even made a return later under the control of Albert Wesker (to which she managed to break her mind control for a split second to show Redfield the device controlling her) before rejoining the good guys.

She has proved time and time again just how bad ass she is and perhaps even the star of the Resident Evil Series.
