10 Beautiful Video Game Songs
8. Portal - Still Alive
When credits begin to roll, most companies don't bother to invest in a particularly inventive song. It's a generally accepted thing that gamers will, in most cases, simply skip them. But doing that in the case of Valve's universally acclaimed Portal would see players miss out on this gem of a song.
The upbeat nature of the track, with its heavy emphasis on generic, pop-like guitar strumming is a beautiful contrast to lyrics provided by Ellen McLain - the voice actress of series antagonist, GLaDOS - which are littered with dark humour and references to both Portal and Valve's other series, Half-Life.
The lyrics fit in perfectly with GLaDOS' character, and the overall humour of the series. GLaDOS refers back to things that series protagonist Chell has done to her, such as dropping her personality cores into an incinerator, and the infamous cake.
Although there was never a planned sequel to Portal, there is some heavy foreshadowing in the song, attesting to the fact that, although GLaDOS had seemingly been destroyed, she was decidedly still alive.
All things considered, this song was a triumph.
