10 Best "The Marketing Was A Lie" Video Game Reveals

4. Final Fantasy III

It took a long time for publishers to figure out how to sell JRPGs in the west. The very fact that Final Fantasies IV and VI were brought to the west as II and III is proof of that. That's three entire games they figured weren't worth their time or money to export internationally. In fact, when Final Fantasy VII was announced, every gaming magazine had to have a couple paragraphs explaining how we we made this three-game jump.

But the way Final Fantasy III was advertised was downright confusing.

Since mascot platforming games were popular at the time, Square Enix - née Squaresoft - made the bizarre decision to put the character Mog front and center. While it makes sense for the ads to draw kids in by introducing them to the debut of the soon-to-be popular Moogles, it ignores the fact that Mog is a totally missable, hidden character with almost zero significance to the plot.

Fortunately, Final Fantasy III or VI or whatever you want to call it is one of the best in the series with a caliber of storytelling that was unparalleled for its time. But you never would have known it from the ads.
