8. Ash Lake
Ash Lake is simply gorgeous. It is such a surprise in how it is so different from most areas. You descend through the Depths and Blighttown and manage to find a way to go even deeper. You expect to find something truly monstrous, but find a massive open lake with crisp golden sands. It makes such an impression.
The only reason it doesn't climb any higher is due to it simply not being that engaging a level. Beyond the spectacle, it's not exactly complex. Were it more expansive and intertwining, it could easily be one of the finest levels the series has to offer.
And then there is the music. The ethereal and powerful chanting music sets the mood for what is such a different area. It's just... beautiful.
