10 Best Areas In Dark Souls
8. Dragon Shrine - Dark Souls 2
Home of the Ancient Dragon in Dark Souls 2, this level is populated by giant enemies wielding enormous weaponry. From your first encounter onwards, you notice some passive NPCs standing and observing. As strange as it seems initially, this is a unique mechanic where they will remain neutral, only performing gestures, unless you summon. If you bring back-up, these NPCs will turn hostile and you'll have to deal with them too.
The whole area really feels like the sort of place the Ancient Dragon would reside and climbing the final long stairway towards the shrine, facing off with a red phantom NPC as the guards watch on and finally encountering the Dragon itself is truly brilliant the first time round.
Encountering the Dragon itself is noteworthy too, as he gives you the Ashen Mist Heart which allows you to access the Giant's memories scattered through the game. Alternatively, you can engage him in combat for one of the more challenging fights where you need to weigh the hefty amount of souls you'll receive against the fact that all the previously passive NPCs will now be aggroed towards you from here on out.
Another example where they player believes everything they are being shown.
